Book Talk Looks Back on Galvanizing 1913 Suffrage Parade

On March 4 the D.C. Bar continued its programming leading up to its 2020 Conference with a book talk by Rebecca Boggs Roberts, author of Suffragists in Washington, D.C., describing the 1913 parade in the nation’s capital that became a catalyst in the women’s suffrage movement, which was in trouble at the time. The carefully orchestrated parade--the first-time people marched on Washington for a political cause--was almost a disaster, but it helped galvanize the efforts for a federal amendment.



D.C. Bar President’s Column Honors Black Suffragists - March 10, 2020

D.C. Bar President Susan M. Hoffman devotes her column in the March/April issue of Washington Lawyer to “the Forgotten Suffragists.” These black women, including Mary Ann Shadd Cary and Mary Church Terrell, fought against the suffrage movement’s racially discriminatory practices to make their own valuable contributions.




CLE Class on Campaign Rules Builds Momentum for Conference


On February 19 the D.C. Bar presented the timely course “Election Year 2020: Understanding the Complex Rules Regulating Political Participation,” the second special program leading up to the Bar’s 2020 Conference. The three-hour CLE class, led by campaign expert Charles Spies of Dickinson Wright PLLC, offered attendees an overview of the rules for advising clients or firm members who are politically active, including regulations on contributions under the name of another and in-kind goods and services.



Author to Discuss 1913 Suffragists’ March in Washington

On March 4 the D.C. Bar will host a book talk with journalist and museum curator Rebecca Boggs Roberts, author of Suffragists in Washington, D.C.: The 1913 Parade and the Fight for the Vote. Enjoy light refreshments, a book signing, and networking afterward. The event is the third in a series of programs the Bar is presenting in the months leading up to its 2020 Conference.
